MPONELA, Dowa - The Biodiversity Advisory Committee of the Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) convened today to oversee matters related to biodiversity conservation, the sustainable use of its components, and the equitable sharing of benefits arising from biological utilization. This meeting is a crucial part of the 2024 implementation work plan.

Dr. Susan Chikagwa Malunga, advisory committee chair, extended New Year greetings to members. In her remarks, she emphasized, "The advisory committee very much values the promotion and protection of biodiversity." She noted the challenges ecosystems, such as Michiru Nature Sanctuary in Blantyre, are facing for instance, hence the need for such oversight functions. Officials from MEPA’s biodiversity and planning section, namely; Davies Chogawana, Mwayi Mkanthama, Emmanual Phiri, Dr. Lilian Chimphepo and Ethel Kamba, presented various topics. These included early detection and rapid response procedures for invasive alien species, the review process of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, and discussions on access benefit sharing and permits.

Additionally, the status of biosafety and the revision of the Biosafety Act in Malawi were presented for informational purposes to the participants. MEPA’s biodiversity focal point, Mphatso Kalemba, provided technical expertise on most of the issues raised including clarifications on some topical issues during the discussions.
